What to expect at this park

Six Flags Great Adventure is a large, coaster-focused theme park with major thrill rides, family attractions, kids' areas, entertainment, dining, and seasonal events. Its extensive coaster collection makes it especially popular with thrill seekers, but there are also family rides and children's areas for mixed-age groups.

Expect substantial walking and plenty of time outside, particularly during hot and humid New Jersey summers. Comfortable shoes, water, sunscreen, and lightweight rain protection are useful, and coaster riders should pay special attention to the park's loose-article requirements before bringing a large bag.

Plan around these

This park is huge

Great Adventure covers a lot of ground, and crossing the park repeatedly adds unnecessary miles. Group nearby rides together instead of chasing wait times from one end to the other.

Loose articles matter

Backpacks, purses, electronics, jewelry, and other loose items are prohibited on most rides. Smaller belongings may need to be secured in appropriate pockets, stored in a locker, or left with a non-rider.

Summer gets hot and humid

Central New Jersey can be hot and muggy during peak season. Water, sunscreen, and occasional shaded or indoor breaks make a long coaster day much easier.

Hurricane Harbor is separate

Unlike some Six Flags properties, Hurricane Harbor New Jersey requires separate admission from a regular Great Adventure theme park ticket. Do not pack for a waterpark day unless it is actually part of your plans.

The park is cashless

Great Adventure operates cashlessly, with Cash-to-Card kiosks available for guests who arrive with cash.

Know the chaperone policy

Guests 15 or younger must be accompanied by someone 21 or older when the policy is in effect. The current policy takes effect daily by 5 p.m., although the park may begin enforcement earlier.
